Slow Cooker Beef Stew for Dogs (and Humans!)

Maine winters are no joke! This morning, I woke up to a bone-chilling -10°F, and on days like this, nothing sounds better than a warm, hearty meal. That’s why I decided to make a batch of my Slow Cooker Beef Stew—a recipe I make to feed the whole family, including our four-legged members!

A Cold Winter’s Day & Hungry Pups

I’ll never forget the first time I made this stew. It was a day just like today—snow piled high outside, the wind howling through the trees. As the stew simmered away, the whole house filled with the rich aroma of beef and vegetables.

My dog, Bailey, parked himself by the slow cooker, sniffing the air with the kind of focus only a hungry pup can manage. By the time it was ready, he was practically bouncing with excitement, tail wagging so hard I thought he might take off!

Seeing how much he loved it (and how much my family enjoyed it, too) made this recipe a wintertime tradition in our home.

Why This Recipe Works

  • Simple & Nutritious – Packed with wholesome ingredients that are safe for dogs.
  • Customizable – Swap out the protein or veggies based on your pet’s needs.
  • Easy to Make – Just toss everything in the slow cooker and let it do the work!

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups water
  • ½ cup flour (optional, for thickening)
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 lb stew beef (or substitute with chicken, venison, or lamb)
  • 2 large carrots, chopped
  • 1 cup green beans, chopped
  • 1 small sweet potato, diced
  • 1 zucchini, chopped

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Gravy Base – In a bowl, whisk together the water and flour. This step is optional but helps create a nice, thick gravy instead of a watery broth.
  2. Add Ingredients to the Slow Cooker – Pour in the flour mixture, then add coconut oil, beef, and all the chopped veggies.
  3. Cook on Low for 6 Hours – The slow cooker will work its magic, tenderizing the meat and vegetables to perfection. Stir occasionally if desired.
  4. Cool & Serve – Let the stew cool before serving. You can refrigerate leftovers for up to five days or freeze them for up to three months.

Serving Tips

Be sure to check portion sizes for your dog’s breed and weight. If you’re sharing with your pup, serve their portion plain—no extra seasonings, onions, or garlic!

Final Thoughts

This beef stew is a warm, satisfying meal for everyone in the family—both human and canine. It’s the perfect way to keep cozy during these freezing Maine winters!

If you try this recipe, let me know how your pup likes it. Stay warm and happy cooking!
